Workshop Introduction:

Join me in the heart of the Suffolk countryside for this one-day photo workshop to photograph an array of British Owls and Birds of prey including Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Long-eared owl, Buzzard and Goshawk to name a few. Throughout this workshop, we will have exclusive access to 28-acres of untouched woodland and marshland in the heart of Suffolk, which will provide the perfect backdrop for these beautiful species of birds.

The dates have carefully been chosen to coincide with the peak of spring flowers at this private woodland, and will allow photographers to capture images of the birds amongst a carpet of spring flowers such as Snowdrops and wild Daffodils, both on static perches and also in flight on repeated flight paths to nail the shots you want!

Although working with captive subjects will never yield the same thrill like that of working with wild animals, these days are designed to allow you to hone your camera and photography skills, which can then be put to use when out in the filed. It also provides an ideal opportunity to build an impressive portfolio of images of native birds amongst natural environments. I will be on hand at all times throughout the day and will give each participant adequate 1:1 tuition to ensure you finish the day a much more confident photographer.

Equipment:

Throughout the day we will be able to approach the birds very close, therefore recommended focal lengths for this workshop is anything in the range of 100-400mm. Longer telephone lenses such as 500mm and 600mm, however, can be used creatively to create a shallow depth of field to really blur the surrounding foliage isolating the bird in the frame. I shoot with Canon EF lenses, therefore if you would like to borrow any lenses throughout the day you are most welcome to do so.

A tripod is also useful to ensure the camera and lens is sturdy but also allowing you to comfortably keep your camera positioned for periods of time whilst waiting for favourable poses from the birds. For low angle ground-level images I prefer using a beanbag which provides solid support for long lenses. Again I have lots of these spare and so if you would like to use any on the day please do feel free to do so.
